Japan Cycling Tour

Come ride with us in August 2017 on this Intermediate Japan Cycling Tour.  We will delve deep into the vibrant Japan culture and tackle some of the best, yet mostly undiscovered cycling in the world. After gathering in Tokyo, we will transfer you in the Bullet Train deep into the Mountains of Gunma. The contrast will amaze, as will the next 7 days of cycling that lay ahead as we visit hot springs, ride over majestic mountains, visit ancient temples and taste delicious local produce on our way.

This Japan Cycling Tour comes loaded with breathtaking scenery, challenging riding and plenty of off-bike experiences to enjoy as well, the stage is set for a uniquely rewarding cycling holiday – one you and your legs will remember for a long time to come.

What to Expect

Join us on our Japan Cycling Tour. It is an Intermediate tour that covers the Central Alpine region of Japan and finishes with a few days in the ancient castle town of Matsumoto. We crest some high mountain passes and delve deep into the less known roads of Hakuba, before tackling the 2703m Mt. Norikura.

Average distance is about 100km per day with approximately 1300m of climbing. Our Intermediate ours aim to strike a balance between time on and off the bike, but it is still designed challenge and a reasonable level of bike handling ability is required. Itinerary

Day 1Arrive Takasaki

Sunday August 26
Today’s ride : 3 pm departure | Post travel recovery ride of 44 km (2hr)

Hotel : Western Style

Overview:
We meet in Tokyo around noon before heading on the Bullet Train together to the Gunma mountains and our starting point. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon exploring the town or perhaps get a few cheeky kilometers in the legs.

Day 2Takasaki - Kusatsu

Monday August 27
Today’s ride : 9 am departure | 86km – 1500m

Hotel : Traditional Japanese

Overview:
A solid day awaits with two categorized climbs as we head up and down the valleys of the beautiful Agatsuma area of Gunma. Roads vary from stunning mountain highways to narrow tracks deep through the back-roads.

Today’s ride : 8am Departure | 120km – 2200m

Overview
Leaving the heady aromas of the hot spring town behind, the group will battle their first HC climb, the stunning Mt. Shirane. Besides the views, the reward for the efforts is the descent, where 35km of down await as we make our way for Hakuba

Wednesday August 29
Today’s ride : 9am Departure | 110km – 1700m (Two Course Options)

Overview:
Staying at our base for two nights means a chance to relax a bit, but first, you must tackle the narrow back-roads and tracks that most will never see. Life stands still here and it is our bright bikes and kit contrast against the timeless backdrop.

Day 5Hakuba - Matsumoto

Thursday August 30
Today’s ride : 7 am departure | 80km – 1500m

Overview:
After an nice climb to warm up the legs, the remainder of the day will be an easy flat roll down the valley into the beautiful castle town of Mastumoto. Enjoy an afternoon of exploring the sights or rest the legs ready for the final few days.

Day 6Matsumoto - Norikura

Friday August 31
Today’s ride : 7 am departure | 71km – 2000m

Hotel : Western Style Lodge

Overview:
Our destination is high in the mountains at more than 1600m elevation. After a few undulations we head up into the valley and on route to Norikura. The Shirakaba pass will test the legs, but once over, the beautiful alpine plateau awaits, as does the view of mighty Norikura, ready and waiting for the final day.

Day 7Norikura - Matsumoto

Saturday September 1
Today’s ride : 8 am departure | 96km – 2500m

Overview:
The final day and what a day it will be as the 2703m Mt. Norikura awaits. Leaving the lodge riders will be straight inot the climb with the next 23km pushing mind and body to the limits. The air is thin above 2300m and it is really felt as power drops and the top seems to tease. After cresting the highest road in Japan, the riders will enjoy the long descent back to Matsumoto and the enjoyment of the final night Sayonara party.

Sunday September 2

After a Sayonara party in Matsumoto the previous night it is time to say goodbye. We will help you with transfers to Tokyo from Matsumoto area and help with any onward hotel bookings or further travels in Japan.
